⚠️ 5 Safety Rules for Whitewater SUP

It is fun and exciting, but as with any other whitewater sport, it can also be dangerous.😬

Let’s stay safe and remember these basic paddleboarding safety rules, so you can enjoy a fun river session without getting into trouble.

👉🏻 Wear the proper equipment

Always make sure you won’t be cold and that your gear fits you well so your movement is not limited. Put on a wetsuit or drysuit, helmet, life vest, shoes, and ideally knee and shin protectors as well.

👉🏻 Use no leash without practice

The only leash you can use on whitewater is the one with a quick-release system, tight to your life vest. BUT! First, you must practice opening it in an unexpected situation, swimming in the rapids. If you didn’t go through proper training, leave your leash at home.

👉🏻 Never paddle alone

You never know when you will need help catching the board floating downstream, setting up safety at the bottom of the rapids, calling an emergency, or helping with first aid. Always have a buddy to support each other and share happy moments.

👉🏻 Make a research about the river

Read relevant blog posts, join local Fb groups, ask on forums. Find local paddlers or companies which can provide you with the necessary information. The most important to know are the water level, river difficulty, and hazards. RiverApp is very helpful.
Also, scout the rapids so you always know what’s coming next on the river. You will have to make decisions very fast.

👉🏻 Remember the safety swimming position

When you fall, make sure to stay on your back, facing downstream, and keep your feet on the surface at any cost. It is necessary to avoid foot entrapment! Start swimming to the shore only after you are out from the rapid.
